PERIODONTOLOGY

PERIODONTOLOGY

It is the specialty of Dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the periodontium (a set of tissues that includes the gums, bone, and periodontal ligament). These tissues are responsible for anchoring the dental pieces in the jaws.

Periodontal problems are probably the leading cause of tooth loss today. In periodontology, we find the only way to avoid premature tooth loss due to a lack of support. In addition to the primary focus of this discipline, periodontology also pays special attention to problems such as bad tastes and odors, aesthetics, occlusal issues, among others.

Periodontal disease is pathological and infectious, leading to tooth mobility and loss, tooth movement, the appearance of diastemas (gaps between teeth), gum recession, and abscesses. It is mainly divided into two groups:

Gingivitis: caused by the accumulation of bacteria in the gingival sulcus, leading to inflammation, and is usually associated with bleeding gums.

Periodontitis: an advanced stage of gingivitis, occurring when, in addition to the gums, other periodontal tissues are affected. At this point, irreversible bone loss is already present.

The success rate in treating this disease is highly predictable nowadays.
